It's almost like these people all also took oaths to some other organization, some "big club" that you or I ain't in, where they swore secrecy to something that they might think frees them from obligations the way a brick layer or stone worker might do what ever it wants to a bunch of bricks or rocks. There might be a word for that kind of group they all belong to (and are not just members in).
