Well I'm sure a lot of us can tell how hostile modern consumer culture can be when it comes to its use of the media and propaganda. This covers how a lot of those problems were created intentionally.

It's how Eddie Bernays used the ideas of his uncle Freud to create the modern consumer culture through propaganda. People didn't need products outside of their needs, but through manipulation of semantics, a lot of the self-destructive aspects of consumer culture were created.
