This is an old theory.

The idea is that the Sphinx must have been eroded by rain fall but Egypt has been dry for a very long time.

However the same pattern can be explained by sand storms which are common.

Basically scientists tried to apply what they knew about wet northern weather effects on rocks to a hot, dry country with very different weather.
