Well, he did the right thing. Notice how the alarmed reaction was not at all appropriate. They already knew who he was referring to. He thinly veiled it, so they push, he gives a similarly veiled answer that doesn't provide extra information, but then all of a sudden the hosts are alarmed and cut him off. Perhaps they expected him to say "jews" out loud when they scripted this.
