The CIA has been proved to have a lot of influence in the media and public opinion and has experimented with actual brainwashing like what happened with MK ULTRA. This is something worth remembering.

This part of the documents talks about the different emotional states created during the brainwashing process. It looks like it depends on cracking the person and then taking advantage of the trauma in order to create a new sense of "belonging" or identity...

I don't think they ever got it to work though.

They just created a lot of broken, radicalised people who went out and hurt others.

They never changed the unibomber's beliefs or belonging, they just made him really, really pissed off.

Of course a big part of the problem is that the whole idea of brainwashing itself was based on a lie, the idea that evil China brainwashed American soldiers into believing the US had attacked Korea with biology weapons when it was actually the truth.

That was the goal. His beliefs already aligned with their purpose for him.
