True. However, a friend of mine visited Peru for an extended stay in 2004 and even back then, the people, descendents of Incas, who lived in huts, had no shoes and no electricity but had cellphones. This is materialistic consumerist for external appearances to the extreme. Maybe the USA is more materialistic, but materialism is rampant worldwide.
