I disagree. A downvote button is used by the vast majority of people as a "dislike" button - one which gives users the opportunity to bury people, words, or ideas they don't like. I think that the lack of a downvote button is great.

Not sure when that was anymore (10+ years ago) but when I started using Reddit there were no comments. I slowly saw the site get better until it peaked around 2011. Then it got too popular and became all about making money. I remember at one point Reddit became the 5th biggest website on the internet. I would say that's when everything really declined.
