My husband and I visited the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, which was a strategic military base during WWII. The US also left everything behind there, too, although they deliberately destroyed much of the equipment that was abandoned. We were told that the US had a contract with their military vendors that they could not bring back any of the equipment from the war. It would not surprise me if such contracts still exist.
