Why do people use that terrible platform?

Use IRC, Matrix, Teamspeak, whatever... Make your own servers, and don't be controlled by some overarching authority who has ultimate control over your access and interactions.

A lot of places I'm on use it. Otherwise, I wouldn't use that cesspool of an app on one of my laptops and tablet.

Yes, the hive-mind conformity thing is unsettling. It appeals to and encourages the worst traits in people.

Well, some of the places I'm on are full on politically incorrect people. Idek how the kiwicord and the /v4c/ discords aren't even banned yet. Most likely don't have faggots reporting them...

Do any of these not completely suck? I mean alt-tech is just the worst crap that I have ever seen.

alt-tech? Did you just make up that term on the spot? IDK how old you are, but those are things we all used before discord came along with a bunch of bloat and flashy colors to attract the normies.

Matrix is alt-tech. IRC is old but web interfaces that I have seen are pretty bad. And I don't know much about Teamspeak except that it is new. So what is most usable? Tell me and I will look when I have time.

Teamspeak is a few decades old. It's basically a simple voice-chat augmentation for games that has text channels to go with it.

IRC has been fun in the past, as it's pretty straight-forward, but complicated enough to keep most of the tards away... and by tards, I mean modern day obama-phone users looking at political memes on farcebook.

This site has an IRC chat embedded, which is kinda neat, but it's a bit buggy and resets frequently.

Anybody can run an irc server, even on the crappiest PC. Get a bunch together and form a network that stays up even if one or more go down.

So I tried these things.

The Teamspeak UI makes no sense to me. Where do I find a server to connect to to try it? It looks like it is only used for private servers.

IRC is just pathetic. I can't see chat history. And I can't edit my old messages.

So, is there anything that doesn't suck?

Yes, teamspeak is not beholden to a central big brother. You can host a server, however you want. It's primary use is a group of people having voice chat in a game, or conference.

IRC isn't made to be a forum. It was made to be a real-time chat solution. You join, talk about what you want to talk about, and leave. For archival purposes, and editing messages, that's what forums are for. Still, many people would idle in IRC, and there are addons for servers that you can authenticate a user and retrieve offline messages, but people rarely used such things.

You can host either of them on a home Internet connection pretty easily.

Discord has the features I asked for. Not having these features is quite pathetic. I think I could program a simple web chat to do what I want in about 10 hours. I will look around some more and then decide what to do.

Well, you do you, I guess. Just don't be surprised when someone who offers a convenient platform they have control over start to do nasty things. Every single one does it eventually. Enshittification.

One day they may decide they don't like you using a certain color text, then controlling what you can talk about, words you can't say, or how many ads they harass you with. The beauty about a decentralized platform is you aren't beholden to some asshole who can cancel you because you said something they didn't like or decide you can't talk on Tuesdays because they said so.

This is how MySpace died, how Facebook is about to die, how Twitter was going to die before Musk bought it, and how YouTube should've died long ago if they didn't use mob tactics to drive their competitors under, like Stream.me, Bitchute, and Rumble. YouTube would've been dead in 2018 if not for them cheating.
