It should be depending on the weapon not a blanket law like they are doing. I don't care if you have a store's worth of hunting rifles or Glock 22's within arm's reach to defend yourself but people have no business storing near military precision weapons. Those have ZERO place outside of a 'well regulated milita' whether that's government or a private militia as long as it's an organized militia which was the case prior to 1775.

Home owners had access to basic weapons for self defense but the 'cold blooded murder' weapons were usually stored in a storage depot that was locked only accessible by keys which were placed in the hands of trusted people who knew NOT ONLY to not misuse them but be willing to lay their lives down to stop those who try to break in and steal them.
