Causing doubt, fear, and confusion. Making people easier to manipulate by convincing them they don't really stand for anything other than what their party current is saying that day.

That isn't the only plausible solution. If enough people are principled and informed, they will object to the actions of such companies and vote with their wallets. If there is no alternative, then absolutely yes this is an indictment of whatever passes for capitalism these days, and people should consider alternatives.
