    Right after the repository got yanked, it wasn't working for me. I believe I downloaded right from http://yt-dl.org/ as well. Just doing a youtube-dl update now (2020.11.17) worked though. It appears that youtube-dl has to be constantly updated to circumvent whatever youtube is doing to try to prevent it?

      Not in my experience. Lately it's had to be updated every week or so. Like parent, I installed from yt-dl.org and it stopped working a few days ago and I had to download the newer version. YouTube breaks things constantly. The NewPipe app on Android I use to play YouTube audio in the background also gets broken a few times a month for the same reasons.
