Have we as a collective completely forgotten that we ourselves have the right and power to choose the content we engage with? What is this insane collapse into allocating that power to an entity outside ourselves?

I think it's the same old believe what the authority figure or organization tells you. People are taught not to think for themselves and not to think critically, but rather to answer in the manner they are told to. I don't believe the earth is flat, but I believe that those who do have a right to believe it and have the right to be heard.
