Story: Playing Basketball in the hood as an Asian
For one of my university club activities we drove to a sorta far away place to a hood area in a city I've never heard of in Pennsylvania, all to go to a park and do outdoor activities for bonding
This was the first time I've experienced (minor?) racism as an Asian back in early September but I only told a few friends about it and wanted to just leave this somewhere
I got there a lot earlier than the rest of the club & saw a basketball court with highschool kids basically from the hood, seeing me as if they've never seen an Asian in person before.
For pickup game they did like team captains and took turns taking people for their team, I'm like 6'1 but I still got picked LAST, prob cuz Im skinny orrrrr :/
As a generally short tempered person I wanted to get the ball so bad to prove them wrong
In the first possession the opposing team has the ball and gives it to their team captain who I was guarding.
Now they DIDNT know I played ball since 4th grade and was pretty good for my age. Fast for a 6 ft guy too.
I just saw the captain started dribbling all fancy getting confident like hes about to try and embarass me in front of everyone,
Im taller than him so I picked up that he was about to meg me, and right when he was about to throw it between my legs I snatched it from him and went scored a layup at the other side of the court.
They took the ball down again and the captain (who im still guarding) said "Gimme the ball"
A white kid said "Bro Ricegum just took your shit dude!" and the other kids started smirking.
Im just like damn, I guess people dont realize how ignorant of a comment that was, and just wanted to embarrass that kid so bad.
The game went on and I didnt play as good as I wanted to but I was definitely exceeding everyone elses expectations over there. Just throughout I could tell they just wanted to block me or steal the ball from me, like I had a bounty over my head or Im being over sensitive and its because I seem to be the new guy there.
It wasnt just the opposing team though, I remember this dialogue very clearly:
Teammate: Yo take the ball up the court
Me: Nah bro you get it
Teammate: (looks at other teammate and laughs) He said nahh bro hahahahah
They really thought I didnt know a decent amount of slang I guess..
Another time:
Me: (crosses captain) oooooh!!!! (mostly cuz I was ticked at him for trying to embarrass me)
Opponent: (in a mocking voice) Oh he said OOh
He fouled me hard to prevent me from scoring but it is a common reaction to getting crossed
After we finished the game even though I was annoyed I just went up to everyone and gave em a g lock handshake or a fist bump cuz I subconsciously just wanted to leave em a good impression for probably their first time seeing an Asian guy. After I left and joined back in my club group all I thought was damn some just need to know that anyone can be the target of racism.
Honestly I got to thank all you guys and the community because before I might've lashed out at him for saying something like that or just left without a word but I recall these stories and video posts of so many people who got it way worse than me and I felt the least I could do is leave a decent impression to them by fist bumping it out in the end.
