Fun fact: I got a stone chip on the way to church one day, figured I'd get a DIY repair kit and fix it after church, and the crack had run across the whole windshield by the time church let out. Glass is funny stuff.

Indeed funny. 100% every front windscreen of the modern 1st world is laminated annealed meaning 2 lites of almost-always bent/curved (it's stronger and more aerodynamic) and most always each layer just 3mm thick so a bit less than 1/8th ". Annealed is not strengthened in any way by laminating it it simple means upon break - it tends to stay in place unless catastrophically impacted. "Crack propagation" is quite a thing as annealed glass has very consistent lattice-work of micro-strands so upon initial crack it wants to crack further and not a damn thing can be done to stop that. Sometimes a "shell or ball-peen" impact can be fixed via an autoglass shop with vacuum applied resin and that actually does work. But not on cracks as they tend to "run" and not stop.

Assume you mean mine. 44 years insanity now of "glass" around the planet and my MSge PH.d from Manchester (UK) of Materials Science glass engineering quite real. Far too few call on me to get it right 1st time but I sure do get lots of jobs to figure out how to unfuck a major glass job.

Just a few tidbits of major FUBAR glass jobs of the planet = (1) most often fuckup is at glass processor (the factory that takes giant stock sheets and converts those into glazing lites to be installed) and they can do that several ways. (2) Then major fuck #2 is architect who draws something fancy but fuck Engineer (people like me) and Glazier have no damn idea how to pull it off. (3) #3 then is glazier who installs and not much brighter than a smart monkey. Axiom = "glazing is a very angry trade" and I so wish I had never fallen into it for now for me at 44 years of it actually just past 20 years there's no turning back.
