We pay 5 bucks less in groceries now, and we pay an extra thousand when the bill comes in for this blatant electioneering.

It's beyond understanding how people can still support this guy.

This is the dumbest idea to date. First, why the holiday? They are estimating people are going to save something like $100 - $200 on tax. Why not just hand out the savings along with the $200 bucks they are giving out in the spring? Say a check for $350 instead? No reprograming the POS machines and you get it as a lump sum.

Better yet time it all for mid January so everyone can pay their ridiculous credit card bills.

Second, if this isn't the most blatant attempt to outright buy goodwill for a desperate government I don't know what is? I think it has backfired as every person I have talked to about this is in agreement.

Last, does this even help? Will $200 - $400 really help if your scraping buy? Come May nothing has changed. Everything is still ridiculously expensive. For the Mrs. and I this will be nothing more then free meals at the restaurant during the tax break. For those struggling it helps for 1 month.

Worse I fear those struggling won't budget this into paying down bills. With beers and liquors GST free it will mean time to stock up instead! Fuck the credit card companies right?

I'm setting a reminder on my phone for 40 years from now with a link to this post. My prediction being by then Trudeau will be openly remembered as the worst Prime Minister in the history of Canada.

My mother - in -law voted for him in 2015. When I asked her why she said.... and this is a direct quote "Oh he's so handsome!"

GST/HST is a consumption REGRESSIVE tax: it hits all richs and poors alike, so it does not help balance the horrible huge wealth & income inequality gap problems we have in Canada.

Better to cancel the GST / HST permanently (or lower it to 1%), and increase the tax rate on the highest income bracket. Because the richest big corporate execs are not earning their money in a fair and honest way anways (eg. Hierarchy-ponzi wage-thefts against their lower level workers + taxpayers-funds-theft with unscrutinized government-to-corporate contracts).
