I almost forgot. My grandfather was a carpenter too. And my uncle moved to Sooke after my grandfather. They built a lot of houses. My uncle as contractor built a lot of high-end mansions in the 70s and early 80s until the market fell out. He was a millionaire and then not, faster than he made it. He kept building when he should have stopped. He then moved on to Colorado and Florida chasing that dragon. He's now been in China for decades as a self-help author.

I like Tofino. I have 80+ books on Northwest art, many bought in 1999 and 2000, before the Internet had a lot of resources. I'm not an expert but I am certainly advanced in the study of the art, and by extension the culture that gives it context. In 2004, while animating TV commercials in NYC I corresponded with the UBC Museum of Anthropology about developing an animation in a Haida-like style. They hooked me up with some folks doing a series. They offered me the opportunity to direct some episodes. I turned them down and still wonder if it was a good idea. All the voices were First Nations actors, but it was all animated in a room of white guys in Calgary. I am a white guy and feel no guilt, but I had in mind hiring or teaching the tools to First Nations artists and having them on the team. We would have integrated more of their culture, their dance, movement, timing, etc. rather than Disneyfying it all. Not to mention all that PC stuff about good jobs for minorities, etc.

I lived there for a short time in 1974, shucked oysters for a living in a small building on the shore of one of those tucked-in inlets back toward Metchosin; anchored out in the bay was a lapstrake sailboat, kind of a large dinghy, that glowed brilliant white against the cedars and rock even on the grayest rainy day, punching through the mist with its purity. Poor little devils, those oysters. It turns out a left-handed piecework oyster-shucker is at a distinct disadvantage. Oysters are right-handed, imagine that.

Thanks for the complementary sentiments. It is depressing but empowering to know, and they don't want us to have any power. Despite all this, there is great potential and hope, but it's not in publicized places. Most importantly we have the numbers. It's our numbers vs their rigged systems. These are very interesting times.

I was born in Victoria 1970 and we moved away a year later. My Grandpa moved to Sooke in the 70s and died there about 1987. I moved there from Oakland in 2007-2009 with my ex.

I miss the west coast. It broke my heart.

OP inserted the word "transexual", which is used similarly to "fag" or "n****r". (Actually, I rescind my 25% remark – you can't really compare that kind of thing.) This word wasn't used in the article.

I support being nice, wherever possible; it's best for people to know what words are likely to hurt people so they can avoid using them (or use them, if they want to be (seen as) arseholes).

If you're asking about the content of the article, I also think that hormone blockers should be used as early as possible in the process, since the effects of hormones during puberty can be difficult to reverse (and by extension think that HRT should not be entered into lightly). I am also aware that parents often have issues with this kind of thing, so telling parents that their child thinks they're trans isn't something that should be done lightly either.

Since people often have issues working through this kind of thing and identity being weird and stuff, people can often be inadvertently pressured into fulfilling social stereotypes (comic), so 14 might be too young to be starting HRT. But it depends on the case, and I:

have no stake in the matter;
have no experience in the matter;
have no knowledge of the case;
am not a psychologist, counsellor, etc.;
have not interviewed the child;
have not met them; and
have not even spent two hours thinking about this. (One, max.)

So really, my opinion means nothing. My argument might, but I would probably concede to a good argument from someone ticking more than zero of those boxes, if it convinced me.

I hear what you're saying. And being as anal as I am about such things it's a HUGE pet peeve. That said, it's also my mission to tech people the proper Metric way of dating things.

12 days of the year may be confused with months. Thereafter it's safe to assume that 14 is the day.

More importantly Metric dates are sortable. December is always alphabetically before January - so it sucks. If you put 01-01-2001 it will get sort-mixed in with 01-01-2019 - so it sucks.

Most ambiguity is with when folks mess with the descending or ascending order of magnitude. Year-day-month or month-day-year are stupid. James Corbett does the latter and he should know better. In 1980 I spent half a year in Calgary, while he was in Calgary. Of course we were kids and never met but they sure were teaching the Metric system until the teachers went on strike.

This is pretty standard on Wikipedia but people still screw it up.

With the Metric time code you always start with largest to smallest units 2019-01-16 20:26:11, though for specific cases one may chose to put the time first it still applies.

The year first is usually a solid indicator that it's a Metric date and most folks don't screw that up. It's often screwed up when they use numbers but put the year last - then it's anyone's guess.

I was born in Victoria, BC. to English/Irish/German heritage, yet I've always loved the NorthWest Coast art, and by extension the culture to understand the art. Actually, I appreciate it all but only like certain types and nations' art. It may seem primitive but actually it has very specific precise rules and symbolism. I even created my own stuff in their style - one of my favourite T-shirt designs and I had big plans for themed projects at Burning Man. I have 80+ books on totem poles and more. In 2004 I was in NYC animating TV commercials (all that's left of my old channel, many are missing for some reaons(s)) but I had also been developing my own projects.

I'd been corresponding with the University of British Columbia's Anthropology department about animating their stories and they turned me onto a studio in Calgary that was about to do just that. While I liked their stuff I actually turned down the opportunity to direct some of their episodes. Reflecting now, I wonder if it was the right move. I was on a high horse and felt they weren't doing it right. Sure they had all First Nations voice actors, but the design, animation, movement, and essence was just a bunch of white guys in a room with computers. Sure they had grants from National Geographic, but I wanted to put the computers in the hands of their people. I could help them learn the animation principles and software, but they could accept or reject these principles and do their own thing. Perhaps perform traditional dances and rotoscope them for a more authentic movement experience. Or whatever... Teach a man to fish...

I spent thousands to get those books before the internet became the resource it is now. I wanted to help tell their stories. But I didn't want to be another white thief, this time of their culture. Maybe this is over-sensitive political correctness crap. Maybe it's respectful reverence. Maybe it's just the best I knew how as a Canuck guy trying to do the proper thing, contacting UBC.

I can tell you one person who's upset. Mark Emery, the "Prince Of Pot", who in an interview with our beloved Press For Truth supported voting for Justin Trudeau for no other reason than JT claimed he wanted to legalize pot. The Marijuana Party needs to get laid cause they're all dorks.

Canada has countless flaws and issues, like most places, so I'm not demanding respect for Canada, but I am demanding it for proper nouns. Okay, maybe a little respect. I'm not proud to be Canadian as I did nothing to earn it but exist, though I do feel more fortunate than most, and it is one of the labels they stick on me. With a capitalized "C".

Please fix this sub title, even if you must delete this and start it over.
