That's fine by me, my Kindle never goes online and I sideload all my books using Calibre.

Same. I've been doing this since 2009. Only issue is the battery is starting to go out in my old Kindle DX.

I regret neglecting my DX so much. Its battery died. A replacement battery is pretty cheap on eBay, though.

People should have learned thier lesson when Amazon deleted books from thier kindle without permission.

I lost my Apple Music previously. I learned, I didn't own any books on Amazon kindle, I used a shared Kindle Unlimited account.

My concern now is whether I can use it as an ebook reader without Amazon, without directly accessing someone else's Amazon account.

My kindle I paid $25 for used. Still going to be a pretty good deal if it's functional for my purposes.

Most of whats on my kindle is epubs I downloaded for free. You can still buy ebooks and use the USB to add them to the kindle hard drive. For me the kindle is more about the ability to store a library of books on it I can pick up and read anytime, instead of shelves full of books Ill have to move, although I realize other people are using them differently

It's just sort of a pain in the ass since I don't use a proper computer.

That explains. Most kindles have a built in web browser, though. Maybe you can use that to download them.

1984, out of all books. Talk about Orwellian.

There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer.

So they can't buy more ebooks from amazon on a whim.

Smart move for a shop.

I boycot Bezos' bs since 2011 where i can.

A friend of mine had lost his job and told me how they handle their slaves. Because he then was middle-managment at Amazon Europe for a while.

Since then Amazon is dead to me.

In have a friend who wraps gifts for amazon.

They have 30 mins for lunch which means they march the whole dept down to the canteen and time them then march them back after 25 mins so they definitely only have half an hour.

However she actually enjoys the job because she sees it as a challenge.

If it is a decision deliberately made, it is ok and fair. If you really are able to accept what Amazon does.

But what can be considering "mild" nudging of its customers and users, Amazon is doing in some "hell-mode"-flavor to its employees. The lower they are in the chain of command the harder they are doing this, sadly. Especially in Europe. The stories my friend told remembered me of the slavery when industrialization began about 200 years ago.

This is very seldomly adressed, imho.

I like my kindle since it supports multiple dictionaries, had dark mode, and has a red light. That said, I just side load all my books or use the "send to kindle" PC app.

Looking into other options for myself, maybe I can jailbreak it.

Yes, they run android and can be rooted just like a phone. Amazon is gay af, but the kindle is a decent piece of hardware for the price once you de-amazon that thing

You're saying I don't need to though, I can just usb transfer whatevs, right?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah you can usb transfer without rooting it

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Do you think rooting it anyways is a good idea?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I prefer it rooted, its actually a fully functional android device, although the screen isnt well suited for some stuff. I don't want amazon deleting my books and shit, which it tends to do with downloaded epubs

I have a kobo which you can read pdfs on. Can you do that on a kindle?

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I believe so. From what I've been told here it sounds like I'll be able to load files without jail breaking it. Just makes it more inconvenient but still useful.

You can, but it requires an extra step. You can either convert the PDF to epub format using Calibre, or root the device and download a PDF reader from the android app store
