I gave up Facebook, Twitter, etc shortly after the 2016 election. On those sites, I had many real life friends that I loved to spend time with in real life. We'd talk for hours about an assortment of topics. In person we'd agree to disagree on some topics and find dozens of other topics that we agreed upon. But on social media, people become a 1-dimensional character of themselves. I started to hate the people online that I loved in person, and it did affect my relationships negatively. Since giving up social media, the quality of relationships has increased substantially. I don't keep in touch with nearly as many people, but the people I do keep in touch with are all genuine friends who would be there for me in a time of need. All the shallow, vapid relationships are gone. All the drama is gone. And I feel like my life is richer for it.
