This film won the Oscar for Best Picture and the supposed author of the book upon which it was based became accepted by some as an important and neglected writer in nineteenth century America. The book was actually written by a white man called David Wilson.

What's interesting is that Steve McQueen, the director, says the part of the book which hit him the most was where it says he wouldn't have minded being a slave for longer if only he was treated better. If the book was written by some white guy then that part just becomes hilarious mawkish idiocy.
