Out my window on the Detroit River I see those ships pass all the time, day and night. They have serious established protocols for navigating and problems and stuff like that. I'm guessing there was some kind of critical mechanical failure or someone got fired and may go to jail.
The black one was lower in the water with more cargo mass. I'm a little surprised there was not more damage, and while they weren't going at full speed, and it doesn't look like much, those ships are HUGE and I would have hated to be on one, slammed to a sudden stop.
