Why do people persecute city pigeons? - Feral pigeons were made by humans. Now we detest them. How did things go so wrong?
HugodeCrevellier 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun 7 months ago

There are just so many of them. And they keep multiplying. And they shit, a lot, everywhere.

An interesting solution would be to breed and release hawks and falcons, which are beautiful and elegant and basically awesome, and these would reduce the pigeon population ... and entertain us with cool aerial chases/battles. :)

Biologist John Calhoun’s rodent experiments gripped a society consumed by fears of overpopulation
chadwickofwv 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun 7 months ago

The experiment is fascinating, but I think they came to the wrong conclusion for what caused the behaviour. Calhoun came to the conclusion the rats behaviour was due to overcrowding, but I think he missed the influence of not having anything they had to do. No need to search for food. No need to search for water. No danger to look out for. I think what was seen in the experiment is the result of extreme complacency.

The pain relieving agent is Resiniferatoxin. From Wikipedia'

Resiniferatoxin (RTX) is a naturally occurring chemical found in resin spurge (Euphorbia resinifera), a cactus-like plant commonly found in Morocco, and in Euphorbia poissonii found in northern Nigeria. It is a potent functional analog of capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers.

At 16 billion Scoville units, resiniferatoxin is rather toxic and can inflict chemical burns in minute quantities. The primary action of resiniferatoxin is to activate sensory neurons responsible for the perception of pain. It is currently the most potent TRPV1 agonist known, with ~500x higher binding affinity for TRPV1 than capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot chili peppers such as those produced by Capsicum annuum. For rats, LD50 through oral ingestion is 148.1 mg/kg. It causes severe burning pain in sub-microgram (less than 1/1,000,000th of a gram) quantities when ingested orally.

That sounds like a hell of a thing to use for pain.

Wait, does America suddenly have a record number of bees?

This is an extremely noisy trendline. If it's high this year, nobody will know until next year when it collapses by 50% and then the idiots in the parrot corps will report it for a week

I assume he's seeing his reflection and thinks he's found a totally stoic other roo that has downloaded his kung-fu moveset and is blocking him perfectly. Poor guy. Must be emasculating.

If an alien civilization can reach this place, they can already speak perfect English by the time they announce they are here. Not sure, how "scientists" can be this ignorant.

If these scientists did something useful, like building fusion power plants to lower the price of energy, perhaps I could be excited about their "work".

This demonstrates how easy it is to make friends, with animals and our fellow human beings, when you feed them.

Would you like to turn your enemy into your friend? If he is hungry, feed him.

If the nations of the world would feed their enemies instead of killing them, the world would have peace.
