Could it be commentator is Latin, while the other may be a derivative of the Latin word commentum or even comminisci?

I found it looking for which was correct: "commenter" or "commentor" - and neither word was a thing until internet forums had comment sections. It seems the first one is accepted and the latter rejected as people who work farms are farmers not farmors, etc. with no shortage of examples like that.

English is a funny language, you will find many such anomalies and redundancies!
