Maybe just to give the illusion of a functioning democracy, so the everyday people think they still have some degree of control over this thing. If Netanyahu loses and then also doesn't get appointed to some high position, I will be super surprised.

His opponent has numerous conenctions to the Chabad-Lubavitch cult, so if he loses, it doesn't really matter.
