back then, after the shah, the cia picked the islamic republic as the new state form, exactly because it was the most antagonistic towards the commies (both the soviets and the arab baath party).

Negative. Carter trusted that nice man the Ayatollah. Iranian leftists, as in Europe, allied with Islam against the Right. Then the Muslims turned on the Left and murdered or exiled them all. Oops.
