Maybe it's just the summer heat, but a lot of major power grids have had outages in the last few months, from NYC to LA and now London

maybe its the switch to unreliable renewable energy and the failure of said energy when there are adverse weather conditions (storming in UK atm)

When did LA have an outage?

At least in Pasadena, the power has been extremely reliable. I have been living hear for several years now (though in different houses), and have only experienced two power outages in total.

They keep telling us to be ready for one.

That was a very minor, brief outage in a far away suburb.

I'm pretty sure Venice Beach is technically part of the city Los Angeles, and it borders Santa Monica. Santa Monica is very much a part of the urban sprawl of Los Angeles county too, with no obstacles like mountains between it and the main city. It is technically a different city though, even if in the same county.

According to the linked article, the outage was in Santa Clarita. By the grape vine. At the northern edge of the county. When you pass through there, you are essentially leaving Southern California.

You’re either operating with different information than me or you misunderstood the report.

I must have misread it as "Santa Monica", probably because I lived there for so long. My bad!

This is a test of the UK government to simulate the issues with this scenario if Brexit were to create a similar scenario.

They shut down the British channel tunnel a year or two ago for this reason.
