I guess winning now means doing the Fortnite dance after planting the flag. I mean, what was the goal? Keeping Ukraine's forces tied up fighting there? Was it strategic or symbolic? Why would the Wagner group gain control of almost all of the city and then announce they were stepping back in a few days or weeks?

Yeah I'm not too sure. My best guess is that they just want Ukraine out of all these contested regions, and pushing them out of every square inch of contested territory is 'winning', whether or not they bother to occupy it themselves. At least that would make sense to me, although I am no expert on military strategy
