Change of this magnitude always (and sadly) consume innocent people along its path. We can only hope that in the end more good comes from this then evil. Time will tell.

103 to 7.8.

Those numbers tell a hell of a persuasive story.

Right, that’s per 100k.

And Singapore supposedly has no crime, and they are strict as fuck on crime.

I don’t agree with their laws, but maybe we can legalize drugs, and then hang violent people.

Yep. I'm certainly sympathetic to the idea that a dragnet can and most likely does sweep up some goodies along with the baddies. But I'm not about to get on a high horse about it from my comfortable life in Canada. Different places have different problems, and therefore people have to employ different solutions.

Well, I am often reminded that I don’t know shit about anything. So, I think I can be a couch side commentator, but really shouldn’t be taken that seriously.

If you don’t mind, I was just wondering about this earlier:

What do you do during the winter? To stay warm. And do you have any coat or jacket recommendations?

Ha, good question, if off-topic! Warmth is all about the layers. Rather than investing in one be-all-end-all coat, we tend to get a bunch of stuff we can put on or strip off depending on the weather.

Where I am we're surrounded by ocean, so it's a wet cold for the whole winter. It sinks into your bones. Plus, it's not uncommon to have fluctuations of up to 30 degrees celsius in the span of just a few days. So we need to be flexible. Here's my prescription for when I'm fully layered up:

  • Bottom layer: A cotton t-shirt. More sophisticated people than me use a wicking fabric to keep sweat from soaking your shirt, but I can't be arsed unless I'm going to be hiking or something.
  • Next, a light, long sleeve shirt. I was given some made of Merino wool which are very comfortable and warm, if a little pricey.
  • After that, a thicker sweater. A lot of people here like fleece, which is lightweight and, I was surprised to find, is made of recycled pop bottles.
  • Then I put my outer layer on. It's either a windproof thinner jacket, which is good to minus 10 C, or a heavy insulated coat for colder weather or if I'll be skiing / dealing with a lot of cold wind. A lot of people like the down lined coats (like, goose down) which I've never owned, but I'm told they're toasty warm.

Apart from that, a lot of people (even here) ignore the rest of their body and just wear the same thing outdoors that they'd wear indoors. But if it's cold, a good pair of long johns under the pants are essential. Get a high tech fabric for these and avoid cotton here.

You don't usually need multiple layers of socks. Just get some good, thick wool ones. And get a good pair of insulated boots if you're going to be outside in the cold for long stretches.

Then a hat, some insulated gloves, and a good scarf that will fill all the crevices between your neck and your coat, and you'll be in good shape. It got down to minus 40°C (-40°F) with the wind chill here a few weeks back and I was pretty comfortable. Good luck!

This makes so much sense. Layers. It just doesn’t get that cold here. But I think I’m going to invest in some cold weather clothes just in case.

I have heard of merino wool. It’s very expensive. But it’s suppose to be the best.

High tech thermals. And good insulated boots. Insulated gloves, and a good scarf.

All that makes sense. Thanks man.

Happy to help.

Time will tell, but it will tell what we can know now. I can almost assure that far more evil will come out of this than good. Do you not remember how awful life was under the paranoid and vengeful USSR? Or even reddit? Or God help us, Discord, which loves mass bans. They delete your account simply because you were in a server that got banned or were friends with someone who was banned, putting many friendships to death forever. They probably do it like this on purpose, and if you try to appeal they basically tell you, "You should kill yourself now, and give somebody else a piece of that oxygen!".

Who would have thought that rounding up the bad guys would make a reduction in the murder rate?

[–]Vulptex 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Would you really rather risk condemning the innocent than missing some bad apples?

[–]Fiyanggu 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Fuck MS-13. If you're rounded up in these sweeps because you hang with your cuz and you've got the tats too, it's only a matter of time that you're gonna be full on in the gang. Better to pinch the weeds when they're small. The should probably recycle them for organ transplants. Put them to good use.

[–]Vulptex 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Organ donation is evil too. Those almost-dead patients can still feel everything and doctors know it. They lie.

Have you not seen how bad Discord is with its "ban everyone in the server" procedure? This is no different.

What about the innocent people being murdered?

[–]Vulptex 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Then let's just round everyone up in prison so no murders are impossible! Safety first, way before quality of life and freedom!

[–]jet199 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

There's no need to go to one extreme or the other.

[–]Vulptex 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah I think I'll take the old murder rate back.

[–]hfxB0oyA 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

The article tut-tuts the lockup, comparing the number imprisoned to if the US jailed 3 million of its population. What it doesn't mention is that the US currently has almost 2 million of its citizens in jail, and in previous years it was well above 2 million.

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

...and there's the B-B-B-ut America! comment, right on schedule.

[–]hfxB0oyA 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Am I wrong?

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Blue

[–]hfxB0oyA 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I don't know what that means.

Anyhow, I neither care about how many people the US has in jail, nor do I exactly disagree with what El Salvador is doing. If nothing worked in the past and everything was terrible, extreme measures may very well be necessary. The people complaining about human rights abuses may be technically correct, but it's easily argued that having your entire country's population terrorized by an ongoing gang war is a pretty damn bad human rights abuse in its own right.

The guy writing the article compared El Salvador to America. I just added some context. All countries use incarceration to reduce their crime rates. Pointing to the US as a comparison, as the writer does, should at least have a little information associated with it.

You're going to contradict everything I say. It's what you're paid to do on this site. If anyone says blue, you say red. So to save everyone's time, I just say blue. And you say red.

Blue.

Say the line, shill!

You flatter me, but I thought the point of this site is that it's not an echo chamber.
