The refused to let him have an operation in case he needed a blood transfusion during it.

WTF? They are all-seeing as well as all-powerful. The New Zealand Government seems to be at least a few years ahead of the US in taking away every single right of the hoi poloi. The Five Eyes are working overtime. It rains too much there for my taste. (a gratuitous insult, I admit)
