What will Russia do to protect land it considers to be theirs?

Its not so much that Russia considers the land to be theirs as that the people there consider themselves to be Russian, not Ukrainian. Especially after eight years of the Ukrainian government and paramilitary forces treating them as second-class citizens, torturing, raping and killing them.

A minority of racist, nazi white supremacist west Ukrainians want the easterners dead and the majority in the west either are happy to allow it or are too intimidated to do anything about it.

I'll give Zelensky credi: he tried, he genuinely did. He was voted into power with a mandate to stand up to the nazis and bring peace to Ukraine, but they threatened to murder him, the US and NATO looked the other way, and he folded like a cheap pair of trousers.

This is why the people of Crimea welcomed the Russians rather than fighting a long insurgency like the people of Iraq and Afghanistan did when America invaded them. This is why the people of Donbass welcomed the Russians. The UN allows self-determination as a human right, that was the excuse the US and NATO gave when they attacked Serbia to allow Kosovo to become independent. The same applies to the people of eastern Ukraine.
