Israel has no civil marriage. You have to have an established religion willing to let you marry in its tradition. Muslims can marry whoever their imams say they can, and Jews whoever their rabbis allow.

Now, this is different from developed or "Western" countries, where two women can be married (in the profoundly boring legal sense, with its wedding cakes, tax returns, and deathbed hospital visits) by a fucking Elvis impersonator.

I like the Israeli way better. I tire of the government's constant, breathless involvement with marriage and the family in my own country.

The Israeli government makes no decision on who can marry who other than to say "work with one of these religious bodies."

If you want to do that, or can't, then their take is that you're some sort of godless heathen and you're free to live your life. Cohabitate, fornicate, make bastards... but you can't do it under the color of religion.
