In the US we sell desks made by prisoners to public schools. They have websites where you can buy goods made from prisoners. https://www.thrillist.com/gear/products-made-by-prisoners-clothing-furniture-electronics

This type of behavior is unfortunately not limited to China, it is happening right next to us

Prison jobs are not mandatory. Forced labor is illegal in the US.

They are not in jail to force them to work, they are in there because they are criminals. I'm sorry that the murderers aren't allowed access to your workplace.

If you don't like that the only jobs available to them pay so little the you can offer them a higher paying job.

Is also perfectly reasonable to pay people less if you are giving them board and lodging. That happens outside prison.

You are technically correct, but when the option is to stay locked in a cell all day or do some labor, most will choose the labor. It's a coerced situation.

In fact the 16th amendment specifically outlaws slavery except in case of imprisonment

It's not coercion if the alternative has nothing to do with the job. I mean you can literally say the same thing about every offer ever made. Wouldn't you rather keep your money and get the things you buy? Is the fact that you wont have the things you buy if you don't hand over the money mean that every sale is coerced?

At that point the word coercion no longer has a meaning.

In Germany they for most parts don't even try this without a "therapeutical" consensus with the prisoner. At least they did not any more after a lawyer friend of mine and i did intervene on this when this (now) colleague of mine was in jail.

This system of explotation of a workforce nevertheless stays the same. Like Ikea had made parts of its furniture made in GDR in the 1980ies it now pulls the same card with Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.
