I just dug into this a bit. OP's source is the most commonly referenced interpretation of world starvation rates but it counts all deaths related to hunger, even remotely. Your approach gives a better estimate of death rates caused directly by acute malnutrition.

Starvation is complex there are a lot people who died who would not have had they been properly nourished. Only a small number of these actually starve. Reasonable people can differ, but a difference of 1,000% is remarkable.
