"The ordinance, which passed 5-2 after several hours of public comment, makes it a misdemeanor to rest, sleep or “lodge” in Las Vegas’ downtown district and other residential areas if shelter beds are available. Violators will be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for up to six months."

go get your asses to the shelter!

Homeless people are a drain on the government budget. The question is, whose budget should we drain? Should we drain the social services budget, which struggles with funding, by providing empathetic solutions? Or do we criminalize it and drain the police budget, which always seems to be able to garner more and more budget dollars whenever they need it? When you view it from a purely political perspective, it's clear why these un-empathetic ordinances are passed. It says a lot about how fucked up our current political environment is.

yeah in our "capitalist" society we are taxed more than 50%. it's clown world because this las vegas ordinance is actually very liberal, basically giving free beds to sleep in in shelters to lazy homeless, even that is hated on by them tho. overton window I guess.

I certainly agree that the homeless shouldn't be sleeping in the streets in downtown. I totally understand why some homeless would be resistant to shelters -- often it is less safe in a shelter than on the street... if the homeless person is mentally unstable, they are not better off in a place with more restrictions. The more I think about possible solutions to the homeless crises, the more I realize that the only financial solution is to bring down the cost and restrictions of living so that people who want to live in a lower standard of living or even off the grid can.

they only want to be on the street cuz that is a prime place to beg and also steal. if shelter is so bad, fine but get out of the city, go live in the woods or something. we need the cost of living high because that keeps out the undesirables, that is the point of gentrification and rising home values. They could move to a place that has lower home values than las vegas, which has some of the highest around, but they don't want to, because there are dumb tourists in las vegas that are prime victims for begging and stealing.
