As a college freshman, my old history professor told us about going to see FDR give a speech. He was shocked to see two burly guys pick up FDR in his wheelchair and lift him up to a special podium. Back then it wasn't common knowledge that he needed a wheelchair. Of course, there is nothing wrong with being disabled but it was hushed up.
