This is truly beginning to make me realize that the first thing people should learn is history.

Through a certain lens, they eventually learn that they can be mislead.

If you don't have a good grasp on issues, it makes you likely to listen and believe instead of trust and verify.

Exactly. We in the West also need to realize how ignorant we are about the rest of the world, through complacence combined with the deliberate suppression/distortion of media coverage. We're also too often guilty of conflating a country with its people, assuming the actions of its leaders reflect the wishes of the population. Sometimes it does because we're not the only ones who have been kept in a narrative bubble but when you hear firsthand reports of what average people are saying as Ania K shares, you get a very different picture.
