As longtime advocates for transparency when it comes to money in politics and political advertising, we are concerned by the actions taken by Facebook this month against researchers at NYU. Although we have a lot more information about advertising online thanks to platform ad libraries, we also know that what is available is far from sufficient to investigate some of the most important questions about targeting and influence, which is why we are calling for universal digital ad transparency. There is a role for third-party auditing of online libraries, and we urge Facebook to work with and take seriously the concerns of independent researchers working in the public interest.
