RAICHUR: Thrown out of job and left with not a rupee to reach his hometown in Bihar, a stressed migrant worker, 35, committed suicide by touching a high-tension wire near Raichur railway station on Monday evening. Perched atop an electric pole and inches away from a live wire, the man refused to heed the pleas of scores of onlookers who were ready to pool money and fund his journey home. Locals said the victim had identified himself as Mohammad Hassan. Raichur superintendent of police CB Vedamurthy said nobody has come forward to claim the body. Police were verifying if he was, indeed, a migrant worker.

The body was sent for autopsy and an FIR registered at the railway police station. Hours before he killed himself, Hassan had food at a slum in Arab Mohalla of Raichur city. Locals claimed his clothes were muddied and torn, and he was walking towards his hometown in Bihar without money. It was around 7pm when Afzal Nayak, from Raichur, spotted the migrant worker near a railway track. “I alerted police after I saw Hassan climbing an electric pole near the slum. I tried to convince him. He looked depressed and was repeatedly asking about trains to Bihar,” Nayak said. “In the next few minutes, over 100 people, including a few policemen, gathered at the spot. I waved a bundle of currency notes at him and promised to arrange a car for him to reach home. Nothing worked,” he added. “The worker kept saying he lost his job recently and could not go home. Everybody promised to help him, but it appeared like he was mentally unstable. As we were talking to him, he touched a high-tension wire and died on the spot,” said Sohail Afsarab.
