One of the most memorable headshots! What amazes me is how the victim's head turns to black after the initial barrage of gunfire. What caused it to turn black? It's like the head got "cooked". I never expected that to happen.

I'd never seen that either and don't have a clue what happened. If this was Reddit we'd already have the 7 correct answers from 11 diffferent experts (verified).

The blast and flash are caused by the combustion products of the gunpowder, and any remaining unburned powder, mixing with the ambient air. - "Muzzle flash", Wikipedia

It's likely burnt gunpowder.

Also, why didn't the AK seem to destroy the head? Even if he used regular FMJ, I'd still expect some warping of the skull.

Was the guy using blanks, did he miss a lot, or what?

7.62x39 is an excellent penetration round and contrary to the 5.56 used in most AR's, doesn't tumble upon impact. That man has several very clean and straight wounds
