A good example of how drowning is silent. They can't scream because they're busy getting a rare breath of air.

It's unnerving how absolutely tranquil everything was in the end.

Drowning isn't always silent. This video reminded me of another where a young couple film themselves drowning. The man in the video does yell out a few times before he finally can't any more.

This would make for good training video for a few reasons.

  • shows that drowning is silent, can't yell while trying hard to breath.

  • trying to rescue a non swimmer in dangerous because they will pull you down with them.

  • see first hand the body language of people struggling, and observe how long it takes for a person to succumb.

  • the importance of swimming lessons, even if it's just to dogie paddle

I know student pilots have to watch videos of planes crashing in order to learn from it, so I'd hope life gaurds in training might see this, despite how tramatic it is to watch.

I remember when I almost drowned as a kid. I was like that one guy who just grabbed onto whoever was floating. I still haven't taken swimming lessons, but I think it's time to at least learn a little bit on how to swim even if I'm nowhere near a situation where I'll be swimming. Don't wanna end up on WPD with drowning as my death lol!

When I started driving for a living, I voluntarily watched vehicular accident/gore/death videos just so I'd know what to expect. I'm at peace now.

My favourite part of life guard training was learning how to fight people underwater. Like you said, sometimes people will actually drown a rescuer in an attempt to breathe air. They'll push down someone next to them in order to push themselves up. We learned some underwater moves to disable people doing this. Because you are no good to anyone if your victim accidentally drowns you.

How do you defend from it, get behind them?

In scuba instructor training, you are taught to keep distance, just out of reach, let them tire out and then when you attempt to tackle them, you are to get behind them, yes, and the best way is often to swim under and behind them as they will try to face you while panicking. If they get ahold of you and force you down, you should swim downwards and that will make them let go of you. Advanced technique for the tackling is a bit of judo where you bait out your right arm that's pretwisted to their right arm, and as they reach for it you pull hard which makes them pirouette around and into a headlock. Now you can swim backwards towards shore with your legs while keeping their head above water with your arms, while their arms flail around harmlessly.

I learned how to swim when I was really young so it's hard for me to grasp the concept of an adult not knowing how, to me it's an important thing to learn. Why would anyone that doesn't know how to swim play near a water source large enough for them to potentially drown in.

Yeah, this is mind blowing to me as someone who can't really remember not being able to swim. I feel like kicking your legs, even in a panicking way, to stay above the surface is just a natural response.

I guess maybe the response without being able to swim is to just keep extending your legs, hoping to finally touch the bottom?

Same thoughts. Carelessness can cost.

So how's this happened? It seems like one guy had a sudden panic attack and somehow dragged the second to the bottom, but what about the third guy? He was really far and nevertheless drowned too.

Looks to me like they weren't able to swim in the first place. I think they got into the water believing it's shallow enough to stand, looks like it was a steep drop to deeper water they weren't aware of.

I thought the same. If you can swim it doesn't matter how deep the water is, unless it's freezing cold and causes the body to go into shock.

First got into deep water because in a dirty lake you can't see the bottom, therefore you shouldn't go in at the first place. They already fucked up. Then drownee n1 starts to panic and grabs drowner n2 who then grabs drownee n3. It's literally a chain reaction.

My mom had to watch her two friends drown in a lake when she was very little. They were out playing and she couldn't get help in time. When she grew up she'd made sure that all of her children are strong swimmers and drilled the same message into her friends for their kids. I do the same. It's a vital life skill.

my kid has been in swim lessons since he was literally an infant. if he fell in a pool at least i know even at a year old he could right himself and grab onto the wall at least for a short while. a lady came to my kids class to tell parents about silent drowning, her daughter was a teenager and on the school swim team and drowned during a swim practice within seconds and nobody noticed until it was too late. one coach can't watch over a dozen kids in a large pool all at once, always gotta keep an eye on your kid or make sure there are multiple adults around at all times.

Also a good point, even training to swim is dangerous.

Fake.

Jesus, all three just sank like stones. Why get in if you have no clue how to swim? I don’t even remember not knowing how to swim. I’m not a great swimmer, but I can kick my legs and stay above water.

Three grown up mofos yet none of them knows how to swim and they jump into a lake? Wow. For people who learnt how to swim at very young age, these videos seem surreal.

I had a similar situation when I was like 9 or 10 years old. On holiday with my parents, met this little fat guy about my age. and we both always stayed longer than our parents on the beach cause there were always other people around to look after the kids. Me being a safe swimmer swims out a little farther, he comes after me and realizes how deep it is and starts grabbing my shoulders while laughing hysterically and pushing me down that I almost got the panics to. At some point i startet scratching his face as hard as i could to make him let go and eventually he kicked himself off of me. To this day I don't know if he tried to kill me, or was just not a good swimmer or couldn't swim at all. Or just stupid asf and didn't know how serious this had gotten. but yeah, crazy stuff and I can't understand why people who can't swim do that stuff.
