The man who died was the aggressor. He was disarmed and shot with his own gun.

Yup, this is one of those successful self-defense attempts. Most of the time, the victim cowers, kneels or hides in a corner and gets shot (what criminal would listen to your pleas to let you live?), but this one admirably fought back and made the guy eat his own bullets.
