They've been looking to get a blue water navy for many years now, it would help them secure foreign influence. Maybe they'll even start intervening in Africa.

It's just a matter of time before all hell breaks lose in the Middle East. Once the US is hit by the banking crisis, whatever Russia and China do next will have a lot of influence.

My theory is that they want the EU to become the only powerhouse left, complete with a unified constitution and military.

i think they want to build an eu army, so they can eventually emancipate from the nato, and disband the nato, weakening america and the west further. and then go on to integrate the whole eurasian continent into one giant commie superstate.

The US will never allow it's tallons to come out of EU. A specific example, they won't allow NATO to die.

There would be another "civil" war between the EU and US if they tried to secede.

They may be afraid that the US will attack them, with so many US warships and US bases nearby.

The crossing of US ships through contested waters happens frequently. Or maybe they are afraid of invasions via HK or even via Afghanistan.

    this might be about securing the east china sea + they have maritime trading routes and deep water ports in faraway lands to protect now.

    maybe eventually do a taiwan blockade or something crazy like that..

    While the US has been wasting money flexing for decades China built its economic and technological might. Seems like they're finally ready to cash in and face off.

    That too, though I would hesitate to call it "stolen". (To explain further requires opening up a huge can of wormsplaining.)

    Also, they're fresh new military will be far more efficient and effective without an enormous ancient military industrial complex far more bloated and corrupted through the many many decades.
