The whole reason the NRA was created was because the US had the same problem. Only 1 in 10 knew how to use the rifle sights.

I don't know what the hind sight setting does, could you explain?

It's basically a way of adjusting the sight to make sure the trajectory of the bullet matches where the sight is telling you it's going to go. It just calibrates the sight.

ELI5:

If you have to shoot at a target that is farther away, the bullet will drop more. So you have to lob the bullet slightly higher.

The rear sight adjusts up and down to allow for this.

Usually it's calibrated in 100s of meters.

So if you set it to 1 - that's 100 meters away.

If you set it to 5 - that's for a target that is 500 meters away.

If you don't know how to use this, say you set it to 9 (900 meters) which is ridiculous for a battle rifle. You can't hit anything at that distance anyway, so I don't know why it's on there. But it means that you are lobbing the bullet WAY TOO HIGH for a normal target, say one that is 100 meters away. You'd be shooting over your enemies' heads.

This is why they found those rifles in that setting. Anyone who was trying to aim this way would have been shot by someone who actually knew how to set their sights and aim. They were missing their enemies. They thought they were shooting harder. They were actually shooting higher.

Africa is a weird place. Lack of education and poverty and basically being screwed over by the whole industrialized world. Witch doctors, sorcery, superstition. My go-to example: there is a widespread belief that if you get AIDS, you should have sex with a virgin girl and it will go away. There is also a widespread belief that condoms are witch doctor voodoo evil that is spread by white men and you should avoid the use of condoms at all costs. So people don't wear condoms, they get AIDS, they then have unprotected sex with a virgin girl (often underaged) and spread the disease further in a misguided attempt to cure themselves. This makes no sense from our perspective, but these are widespread beliefs in Africa and have led to some really alarmingly high rates of infection of AIDS and other STIs.

it compensates for distance of the target by in/decreasing the ballistic trajectory of the bullet

If you turn it to the maximum setting then the gun shoots harder
