Forced, but here's why he did it voluntarily. Deceived, but here's how they are shamed despite knowing what they're doing.

Somehow these monologues all turn into an exaggerated blame game where rich athletes and movie stars have their cake and eat it too.

These "rich athletes" generally come from poorer families.
They have a limited time to accumulate wealth (by selling their bodies and talent), and they have many years to live after, and the poorer families to still support.

The reality is his options are chance it with an injection mystery serum, or the guaranteed loss of income as the planet slides into a decade(s) long depression.

The golden shackles were already on his arms.

Now it's in his cells, and there's no possibility of freedom.
