It's the Near Enemy vs. the Far Enemy.

They don't agree on much, but both Islamists and Western leftists agree that Christians and the West in general must be destroyed. They'll fall to fighting afterwards and the Islamists will wipe out the leftists (like they did in Iran - here's a good read: How Iran’s Theocrats Allied With — and Then Crushed — the Left. By Jacobin, no less.

Those leftists supported the imams because they thought that was the anti-imperialist line.

Khomeini didn’t use the word “anti-imperialism.” He talked about “Big Satan” and “Small Satan.” The Big Satan was the United States. The Small Satan was Europe. The leftists who went toward him translated that as anti-imperialism in their minds. In their minds.

Chafiq emphasizes this last point, raising her eyebrows and speaking in English to ensure that I get it.

Ooh that’s an interesting bit of information about the Iranian revolution that I’d not heard before. Thanks.

It's not surprising considering what the US did before.

Yes, it's totally reasonable that calls for violence are answered and acted upon. Those 9 year olds were asking for it!

I didn't say it was necessarily reasonable. Just not surprising considering the US has just overthrown their democratically elected government and appointed a western backed dictator. The religious extremists say "join us against the big Satan." It seems reasonable unless you know what the religious right was planning in the background.
