What's next? They gonna ask the baby it's gender? At best it'll say "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH", but that's just indicating that it's alive, not an answer.

We best hope they don't start cutting the genitals off right at birth, but a certain ethnic group has already been mutilating them, not only them, but another ethnic group does too.

I'm curious how they would bother to develop a metric for objectively "gendering" a baby.

If it has a penis it's a boy, if it doesn't it's a girl. Seems the most practical way of visually sexing a child.

Are we going to take the child and give them a toy truck and a doll and whichever they go for first makes them a boy or a girl? Or non-binary if they go for neither. We going to have a blue ball and a pink ball and a tungsten cube, and let the baby choose?

Perhaps we will see a babies preference for sucking at the tits of mother to be an indication that the child identifies as a woman.

Sadly, even if I was joking in a different response, inevitably it's going to be "all babies are to be considered nonbinary until such time as they learn how to speak and can tell people their gender identity themselves."

My understanding of the word "non-binary" is that it essentially is a meaningless term that can apply to everyone regardless. It means different things to different people. Some see it as a statement that they don't conform entirely to their gender rolls, ok, congratulations you are like everyone else on the planet that isn't some weird idiot who thinks boys can only do "boy things" or that girls can only do "girl things" no matter even trying to argue what is what.

Others see it as some weird third gender option. I don't identify as a male or a female? Ok what do you identify as? I identify as not that? Ok. I identify as not being a table, does that make me non-table? Perhaps I identify as not being un-identifiable, does that make me a super identity? Or perhaps I identify as hydrophobic, does that mean I can go outside without getting wet?

It's all nonsense really. Like a Dr Seuss nursery rhyme.

Still, I think it's fine to have a place on the form for parents to put down "non binary" since you know parents are gonna do that anyway, and well, if we list em up we have documentation in the future if these kids ever want to sue them. You gonna argue that a baby has a gender identity in 20 years? Will it even be a thing? Somewhat doubt it.

I think the real question that comes into play is, why have sex boxes to check at all (a serious question for me, outside of medical realms, it seems like there isn't really a particularly strong reason for the government to bother with that information on ID.

Um, eckscuse me, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHgender is valid and perfectly acceptable, as many SJWs prove in life.
