There was fury today after a transgender rapist attacked two women as a man then changed gender before the trial.

Isla Bryson was a shaven-headed Adam Graham with a Mike Tyson-style face tattoo when she carried out the violent sex attacks in 2016 and 2019 after abusing the victims she originally met online.

Bryson, who claimed to have had gender issues since the age of four, began transitioning from a man to a woman in 2020 after being charged with the rapes. She denied the accusations, telling jurors any sex was consensual - although she insisted she did not like sleeping with women and they made the 'first move'.

There was no reference to the 31-year-old having a gender recognition certificate during the trial.

It is understood she is being held in a segregation unit at Cornton Vale women's prison, where she will be risk assessed ahead of sentencing to see where she will serve her term.

Today Bryson was found guilty of the two rapes. She denied the charges, saying in evidence she 'would never hurt another human being'. Her defence KC Edward Targowski even told High Court in Glasgow: 'If you accept that evidence, that she is transitioning, that she is aiming to continue on that path to becoming female gender, that goes a long way to acquitting her of these charges'.

Scottish Conservative shadow community safety minister Russell Findlay said today: 'This rapist decided that he was no longer a man only after appearing in court on a rape charge.

'We now have the utterly perverse situation where a Scottish court refers to someone who says he identifies as female using 'her penis' to rape two vulnerable women.

'We warned of the inevitability of this happening if the SNP's gender self-ID law passed, but for it to have become reality is deeply worrying and an affront to the victims.'

If you accept that evidence, that she is transitioning, that she is aiming to continue on that path to becoming female gender, that goes a long way to acquitting her of these charges

You always have to wonder if lawyers truly feel no shame. I don't think I could ever stand in front of anyone and spout such bullshit, knowing full well I'd likely be letting a vile human being onto the streets if someone buys my bullshit

I think the reasoning is you do everything and anything in defence of your client and then if they’re found guilty there can be no comeback. Remember the taxi rank system means that barristers don’t have a lot of options to choose their clients, especially in the specialist law fields like sex crimes.

I’ve watched quite a few videos by a barrister who does animal rights work, and he says that he often finds himself in court representing farmers against animal cruelty charges because he is one of the top animal law barristers and so if a client comes up in the taxi rank he has to take them and provide a full defence even though he himself is a vegan, animal rights activist.

Personally, I’m glad the barrister made that argument, because now it’s been rejected by a jury in a rape trial it very likely won’t be tried again.

They want self-ID, they can’t disavow some self-declared trans if their whole philosophy says that self-declared identity is absolutely sacrosanct - they can’t start gatekeeping it now.

yeah, the gasket was blown when they said "you don't have to have a need to become the opposite gender (so binaristic!) or surgery (medicalism!) or dress differently (straight-passing) or do literally anything other than change their name": and they always have nice-SOUNDING motte-and-bailey arguments ("older women have lip hair! having short hair doesn't make you less female!") and it all just melted together

I think it was because of Jenner (a Republican who said you had to have dysphoria and hormones didn't magically melt away your skeleton except in terms of osteoporosis)

Yeah it'd a clear and obvious gambit to lessen the charges. Absolutely rubbish argument though.

The charge is rape. Whether or not he legitimately has gender disphoria thinks he is a woman and is going through with a transition is utterly irrelevant to the question of "did he rape those women or not?"

Race religion creed or occupation are irrelevant. Was the crime committed? Yes or no?

This is one of the top stories in the UK at the moment, it's peaking the whole country. The BBC coverage only uses the picture of him wearing his female disguise but most other media are using his male picture as well.

Clearly the proper thing to do with self ID is for all the men to just self ID as women and all the women to just self ID as men so that when the perverts go into the women's room they find it filled with men then get angry and at that point you can just cancel them for transphobia and they'll disappear in a poof of illogic.

Hardly a new phenomenon. At Cornton Vale it was reported that the majority of transwomen only identified as such after the arrest.
