Situations like these really showcase one of the biggest problems in the western entertainment industry for the past 10 years:

People like her still getting work in the industry despite constantly butchering their jobs and handling them in a very unprofessional manner.

Seems dumb. But if you're dealing with weebs I kinda get it mate. Like this tweet is ducking retarded. And I don't know what the complaint is so I can't comment on that. But I can say that weebs will jump on shit and become convinced that some translation doesn't actually capture the "true spirit of Japanese" or some such nonsense but they can't actually read the language themselves so they are just parroting some shit take from a barely competent student that doesn't yet understand the concept of not directly translating shit because the English look horrid and stilted and they are upset that it's different from their fan subs.

Like I can translate 糞 as fuck every single time if I am a fucking dumbass and don't understand that fuck is a far stronger curse than 糞. Damn is closer? Or even just literally, shit. Depends on context. Won't stop some weeb for dunking on you for choosing damn instead of fuck.

There's this idea floating around online that breath of the wild is mistranslated and it "ruins the experience" because the quest log in English is in 2nd person but it's in 1st person in Japanese. Of course this idea is totally bullshit because anyone who can read Japanese can see as such. But most people can't so they just double down on that shit. All because some taiwanese person wrote a blog post that got picked up by some English blogger and neither realized that

  1. You need to reword shit to fit text boxes because surprise you need less characters to write asian language.

  2. Japanese pronouns don't work the same way as in English. 自分 can be a 1st or 2nd person pronoun depending on context.

Being unable to translate 100% of something from another language is understandable.

The problem is that the person in the tweet is infamous for intentionally butchering translations and then act like a pompous brat on social media towards people who don’t agree her decisions, things that would’ve caused her to get fired if she worked in any other industry.

Gotta give some examples before I cast judgement. She certainly is acting like a pompous brat on Twitter and she looks like a rad-fem, but appearances are just that.

All I can say is that no matter how you translate shit you'll get a bunch of weebs complaining about it no matter if the translation is good or bad. Thing is the people who actually know Japanese don't give a fuck since they will just watch the original.

All I'll say now is that basically any localization is gonna change a bunch of shit. Because unlike translation the goal is to make the entertainment media profitable in the target market, and not to simply express the original intent as is written. Now that can certainly be done poorly by hack jobs, but I will give a bit more credit to someone actually paid to do it than weebs who intentionally don't translate shit so they can leave paragraph length footnoted in their fan subs.

I might know what the fuck an onigiri is but it's logical to change it to a doughnut for the foreign market that doesn't know that shit.

I'm happy to cast judgement on any translation or localizations she's made though but you gotta show me primary sources. I see so much , "the original Japanese says this" but mate, just post the original Japanese then, like seriously if you're complaining about a translation you gotta assume there are people who can read both. And if you can't read both you're just parroting someone else's opinion without any clue if it's true or not.

"お前はお釜だ" What does this mean? You are a fag? There's a kettle in front of me?(or maybe it means both) If you can't read shit I can just string together nonsense like 珍紛漢紛 and you'll have no idea if it actually means something or it doesn't.

That's the problem with both the industry and the criticism of it. It's not that you can't criticize, or make bad translations, but that the idea isn't that you can't always translate 100%. The problem is it's extremely difficult to translate 100% ever. Literal translations don't make any sense because there isn't a one to one correspondence of words or even basic morphemes sometimes. Even simple words like "blue" or "animal" will have differences in meaning. Is a fish an animal? Most Japanese people will say no, it's a fish. Is the light at the bottom of the traffic signal blue? Japanese says yes. It's the same color as the west mind you but they call it blue. Or green I suppose since the Japanese word for blue does somewhat encompass both concepts.

It's fucked. It's amazing that any two people can communicate across these huge cultural gaps. We're fucked as hell any time we actually encounter aliens and need to figure out some entirely inhuman language.

But I guess my point is even a "direct" translation is going to be extremely subjective. That or it's going to be practically useless at conveying meaning. Since basically you gotta change how the thing is said entirely a lot of the time for it to even make sense and that is a subjective choice with no singular right way of going about it.

Basically my first inclination was correct. This is weebs getting triggered by bullshit because they worship anime and have structured their whole life around it have apostasy reactions towards anyone who would dare to change the sacred text, in what appears to be a kind of borderline softcore hentai series.

Can read the original article here. I could nitpick all of it but I'll choose what I think are the most damning examples. As is common with this taking single lines out of context and saying "look the translation is different" doesn't really give us any real information about whether the translation has changed anything substantial or if it still fits with the feeling of the original.

Good example of this "普通なら関わらないタイプだけど" being translated as. She isn't the type of person I would ever want to hang out with. Is a perfectly fine translation. And the person complaining about how it's not literally the same is missing the point anyway. Since the implication in Japanese would be that she's not his type (duh it's a hentai it's about sex) but of course some dumbass weeb can't read between the lines there and will choose the most dead and boring literal translation that they can.

At the end the writer says.

"This blasphemy to English translating has sadly existed for countless years, from Funimation’s political agenda pushing, insertion of absurd and irrelevant memes, overall inaccurate translations, and their equating of loli and pedophilia."

Blasphemy. Betrays the fact he's a stupid weeb. It's a smutty TV show about some guy that turns into a dog and gets to look up his owners dress no? Blasphemy my ass.

Also Loli is pedophilia. Again duh. This is like the time the weebs freaked out about that CNN peace where they went into porn shops and we're disgusted by the underage school girl rape porn. Because that is a normal fucking human reaction to have when you see that shit. But the weebs freak out when someone makes the connection because, they are pedophiles, and you are calling them out.

Can't tell from the article posted. I agree she's being a nonce on Twitter but well, it's Twitter it's basically an outrage machine.

What I've seen in the article isn't anything worth complaining about. And the person making the complaints basically loses all credibility as someone worth listening to by describing the translation as blasphemous and outing themselves as a pedophile at the end.

Is she even a legit, real translator? I'm an actual, professional translator. And her twit here gives me the idea she she's a twat. As if she doesn't know shit about the centuries-old debate on "literal translation vs accurate translation", on the "adapting to the target culture despite how it might sensibly change the original phrases vs keeping the original culture that might be completely misunderstood by the new audience"..... and all that.

Can I guess she's not a translator, but a "translator", who gets hired only because, due to her shit-poor resume, they can pay her with breadcrumbs?

She's being an idiot for angering the fan base I reckon because who else watches "I reincarnated as a dog and got adopted by my crush" except the rabid weebs?

Then again maybe this is just an outrage marketing strategy? I certainly would never have even heard of this show if it weren't for this twitter spat. Maybe any publicity is good publicity after all? Though I still won't watch anything so trite and overdone as the "I reincarnated as x" anime series.
