The trick is finding a customer base that's both dumb enough and fanatic enough to make that a legitimate business case.

The contortions these idiots and defectives go through to demonstrate how much they hate her is just ridiculous.

To be fair, if I were a bookbinder and I knew I could turn a £5 used book into a £150 rebound book and there were gimps willing to buy them, I’d be doing that shit too.

Oh no, I applaud the successful grift, even as I am simultaneously disgusted by it and envious that I didn't think of it myself. I was referring more to the silky smooth brains that actually gave over the money for it. They're so steeped in their bile and hate that they don't even hesitate to give over money when someone pushes the right buttons.

Well, technically its just a used book not in great condition, and her book still gets purchased, these idiots are essentially just paying for someone else to deface a book they could damage themselves without much effort. It seems stupid, but undoubtedly not copyright infringement

Yeah were I an author and I saw someone doing this I'd just laugh.

It's like the old saying a fool and he/them money are soon parted.

Yep. Just like when fundies of a different sect used to buy them to burn.

So he takes a book that is assigned the identity of a J.K. Rowling book when the publisher put her name on the original cover and copyright page. So this person cuts off the offending parts and applies a new cover to change the appearance. Now it is no longer identified as a J.K. Rowling book and is safe to be purchased as the buyer will not in fact own a book by J.K. Rowling.

Makes perfect sense, if you disagree you must be a bigot.

Yes but what happens when Rowling releases the new edition and adds her name in the margins of each page.

Cause that's what I'd do if I were her. Some books do that. It's a bit narcissistic. But they'll be a bunch of people complaining about it and giving you free advertising.

Hell at this point it's almost profitable to slip in some "transphobic dog whistle" into your marketing strategy so it convinces these crazies to go promote your book for you.

Your Equity, my client person took great pain to ensure the name of the transphobic author whose name shall not be spoken in this court is removed from their copies of Harry Potter books. Clearly, the charge of supporting bigotry should be dropped from this case.

Flom sells the full set of seven "Harry Potter" books for $1,600 Canadian dollars, or $1191.

*tips fedora* gotta respect the hustle, well done sir.

If I may, I would like to use this opportunity to shill my own product.

You see while rebinding the books to remove she who shall not be named from the cover is a noble and worthy goal reminiscent of the ancient Pharos of Egypt scratching the names of their enemies off of the monuments, it unfortunately doesn't go far enough as the book still contains the indomitable evil of she how shall not be named, ideas, letters, and words, you are breathing in second hand transphobia whenever you read about the boy that lived under the stairs, why just the concept reinforces the binary.

That is why I am proud to announce my own version where any and all potentially problematic material has been replaced with fully realized and future proofed content that is 100% guaranteed to be just as progressive and relevant in one hundred years as it is today and the best part is she who shall not be named won't even receive a single shilling. Strike a deathblow to the evils of the heteronormative capitalist patriarchy this holiday season with the gift your family will remember for generations to come. Only $50. What a steal!

It's carte blanche as if you could tell the important difference. That's the French pride flag color. Don't be ignorant. Do the work.

I read your book from cover to cover, a fascinating, if quick read. Highly recommend!!

Queers can't erase normal people and nigras can't erase the Civil War and slavery. Get over it.

I am surprised that the result looked as good as it did. I think it's legally questionable, but at least there was some effort.

"Artist." LMAO! "Oh no, the writer who brought me so much joy disagrees on some mundane point on biological fact." These people love to shit in their own nest.

Why would you think it’s copyright infringement?

Rebinding books for sale is done all the time.

In many legal jurisdictions, authors have a right to be credited for their work. Removing an author's name from their book would definitely be illegal in those regions and leave this guy open to legal action.

[–]Voater 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I get that you can buy and sell used books, but the part I don't get is this: You can have a business selling book covers. You can even add your custom artwork to them. You cannot however put copyrighted content on those book covers, such as "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" without permission. So how is it not infringement to replace the original covers with your custom book covers and sell them at a premium? It doesn't seem to meet the fair use standards.

[–]Alienhunter糞大名 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Legally you are probably right. In a strict sense. But this is probably an area where you'd argue that the text is more of a label than anything under fair use in the same sense I can sell you my review of the book and mention the title as many times as I want. Will that hold up in court? Dunno, I very much doubt anyone cares to challenge it since this sort of thing basically doesn't hurt anyone's profit margins. Unless they are going around competing directly with a hardcorver release or something.

Gotta say, I admire this tranny's grift. And I'm sure Rowling doesn't give a fuck. After all, she can legitimately say she's enabling the success of a troon owned business.
