At least the 4 elements were based on observable phenomenon and have some basis in reality if you consider them just crude interpretations of the states of matter. Earth=Solid, Water=Liquid, Air=Gas, Fire=Plasma.
Whereas the 3rd and onward genders are based on... feelings? "I feel like a girl today so that's what I am" - there's nothing even remotely scientific about it.
